There have been rumors in the country’s cricket for a long time that former captain Tamim Iqbal Khan will join the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Although he has not made the matter public. As the BCB elections are approaching, the former country’s best opener announced his participation in them. Tamim wants to become the BCB director first, and then he has his eyes on the election for the post of president.
Tamim Iqbal said these things in an interview given to a leading newspaper in the country. Sports-based website Cricbuzz also reported on the same issue. Where Tamim said, ‘No one can say in advance that he will be the president. I myself see and hear a lot. But the main question is whether I will participate in the BCB elections or not. If we talk about the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), there is a direct vote for the post of president. But BCB is different. Here you have to become a director first.’
According to the BCB constitution, BCB directors will be elected in three categories. In the 25-member board, 12 directors are elected by the votes of 76 councilors from the Dhaka-based club (Category-1). From Category-2 (regional and district cricket association representatives), councilors from 8 divisions and 64 districts vote and elect 10 directors. In Category-3, one director is elected in the ‘other representatives’ quota. In addition, the National Sports Council (NSC) nominated two directors. The elected directors then voted to elect the president.

After becoming a director in accordance with the constitution and process, Tamim has his eye on the post of president, “If two presidents are candidates, the directors vote and choose the president. So if you ask me whether I will participate in the election or not, I have enough reasons to say so. This time I am running for the post of director. If I want to do something for Bangladesh cricket, I have to sit in the most important seat. I believe that if I come to the board, I must have the power to make decisions. It would be foolish to say now that I want to be the president. If I see that there is sufficient support, then I will consider it.”
Tamim, however, has already started preparing to join the BCB. He has invested in two clubs as an organizer, and he has the possibility of participating in the election to become a director as a councilor of either of them. Tamim believes that the time has come to choose candidates who can really take the country’s cricket forward. He said, “Everyone says there should be no politics in cricket. But what is really happening? Attacking each other, spreading rumors, all this is going on. But the real discussion is not happening, who is the most suitable candidate for cricket. Many want to become directors, but the real focus should be on who is really qualified.”
Incidentally, the last BCB election was held on October 6, 2021. The next day, the first meeting of the then BCB committee was held. Accordingly, the new election must be completed by October 7. The constitution stipulates that the board’s CEO, on the instructions of the president, must give notice of the nomination of the necessary councilors at least 30 days before that. After that, the election commission formed by the executive committee will complete all the formalities, including preparing the voter list, announcing the schedule, and finalizing the election rules.
