Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns has won the 2024-25 Magic Johnson Award. This award is given by the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA) to the NBA player who performs well on the court and also shows respect and kindness when dealing with the media and fans.
Durant had a strong season, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. He was also chosen as an All-Star for the 15th time in his career. Off the court, Durant is known for being respectful and open with reporters. This is the second time he has received this award—the first was back in the 2010-11 season.
PBWA president Howard Beck said, “We’re happy to give this award to Kevin again. He’s always been one of the NBA’s most respectful and thoughtful players when talking to the media. He never avoids tough questions and is always ready to have honest conversations, whether about a single play or bigger topics in basketball. Reporters appreciate how open he is.”
Beck also mentioned that Durant supported reopening locker rooms after the pandemic, helping reporters connect better with players. His love for the game and willingness to talk openly make him a great example for others, both on and off the court.
Donovan Mitchell from the Cleveland Cavaliers came in second place this year. The other finalists, chosen by PBWA members, were Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat), Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana Pacers), and Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors). All PBWA members then voted to choose the winner.
Kevin Durant has now won this award twice. He joins Stephen Curry (2016, 2024), Damian Lillard (2017, 2020), and Shane Battier (2007, 2013) as two-time winners.
The award started in 2001 and is named after Magic Johnson, a former Lakers star known for being kind, thoughtful, and helpful to the media during his career.
Each year, the PBWA gives out three awards — one to an NBA public relations staff (Brian McIntyre Award), one to a coach (Rudy Tomjanovich Award), and one to a player (Magic Johnson Award). These awards go to people who do a great job working with the media and helping fans stay informed. Since 2020, the PBWA rules say no one can win two years in a row.
The PBWA includes over 200 writers and editors who cover the NBA and WNBA for newspapers, magazines, and online news.
