IPL 2025: Both Teams Fined for Breaking Rules Again in Qualifier 2

IPL 2025

PBKS defeated Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 and easily reached the Grand Final, which will take place on Tuesday.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined because his team bowled their overs too slowly during Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 against Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Since this was Punjab Kings’ second slow over-rate offence this season, Iyer was fined ₹24 lakhs. The rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were also fined. Each of them was fined either ₹6 lakhs or 25% of their match fee—whichever amount was lower.

(On staying calm while batting) “Honestly, I’m not sure how I stay calm, but I really enjoy big matches. I always tell myself and my teammates that the bigger the moment, the calmer you need to be if you want good results. Today was a good example—I focused on my breathing instead of panicking. (On chasing over 200 runs) Like I said before the match, every player needs to show confidence and intent from the first ball,” said the Punjab Kings captain during the post-match presentation.

“Our team showed great intent, even though we couldn’t fully take advantage of our good start. I also needed some time to settle in, while others were batting aggressively from the other end. I know that the longer I stay at the crease, the better I play and see the game. (After losing to RCB) We’ve played really well all season, so we’re not focusing too much on that loss. It’s better to forget that and move forward. One match doesn’t define who we are as a team.”

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been fined because his team bowled too slowly. Since this was Mumbai’s third slow over-rate offence this season, Pandya was fined INR 30 Lakh. The rest of the playing team, including the Impact Player, were each fined either INR 12 Lakh or 50% of their match fees—whichever amount was lower.

Hardik also praised Shreyas Iyer, saying, “Shreyas played really well and took smart risks. The target was fair, but our bowling needed perfect execution. Instead, we were under pressure and didn’t bowl as well as we planned. (On not letting Bumrah bowl the 17th over) Looking back, maybe it would’ve been better, but at that time, it felt a bit too early.”
