Double Century in T20 Cricket: Players Who Achieved the Impossible

Scoring a double century in T20 cricket still seems like an unimaginable feat. With a team limited to just 120 balls to either set or chase a target, an individual hitting 200 runs in this format is remarkable. However, this achievement isn’t entirely unheard of, as the first cricketer to score a T20 double century was Sagar Kulkarni back in 2008.

While West Indies powerhouse Rahkeem Cornwall is the most recent player to reach this milestone, doing so in the Atlanta Open T20 League in 2022, the other three known double centurions in the format all hail from Indian origin.

Prince Alapatt Scores 200 in Thrissur’s Division League

In April 2024, Prince Alapatt became the latest cricketer to join the elite list, smashing a spectacular 200 runs off 75 balls in a Thrissur District ‘B’ Division League match. Playing for Octopals Cricket Club, Alapatt’s incredible innings featured 23 fours and 15 sixes, leading his team to a massive 122-run victory over Udbhav Sports Club.

Well-known in Kerala’s T20 circuits, Prince Alapatt is not only a professional cricketer but also a cricket coach at Thrissur’s Devamatha Public School.

Rahkeem Cornwall’s Astonishing 205* in Atlanta Open 2022

Rahkeem Cornwall shocked the cricket world in 2022 when he hammered an unbeaten 205 runs off 77 balls for Atlanta Fire during the Atlanta Open T20 League. Known for his powerful hitting in international cricket, the towering all-rounder took on the bowlers right from the start, hitting 17 boundaries and 22 sixes at an extraordinary strike rate of 266.23. Though the Atlanta Open is not ICC-recognized, Cornwall’s innings was a display of his sheer power and stamina.

With contributions from Steven Taylor (53) and Sami Aslam (53*), Atlanta Fire posted a massive total of 327/1 in their 20 overs, eventually winning by 172 runs as Square Drive could only manage 154/8 in response.

Sagar Kulkarni – The First to Reach a T20 Double Century

Sagar Kulkarni was the first batsman known to score a double century in T20 cricket. In 2008, while playing for Marina Club, Kulkarni blasted 219 runs off just 56 balls, helping his team set an imposing total of 368/3 in their 20 overs.

Subodh Bharti – The First Indian to Hit 200 in T20s

Delhi-based cricketer Subodh Bharti became the first Indian to hit a double century in T20s in 2021. Representing Delhi XI, Bharti remained unbeaten on 205 off 79 balls against Simba during an inter-club match. His incredible knock propelled his team to 256/1, and they later bowled out the opposition for 199, securing a comfortable victory.

Despite the likes of T20 legends like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, and AB de Villiers not having reached this milestone in official matches, the way T20 cricket is evolving makes it likely that we’ll see a double century in an official game soon.
