IPL 2024 to Feature 74 Matches Including Playoffs, with the Final Set at Chennai’s Chepauk on May 26.
IPL 2024: 74 Matches to Be Played, Final in Chennai
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most-viewed sports leagues globally. Since its inception in 2008, the tournament has gained immense popularity, thanks to its thrilling format that features top cricketers from around the world. IPL is not just a cricket tournament; it’s an entertainment extravaganza, complete with cheerleaders, music, and enthusiastic fans. Many even add to the excitement by placing bets on trusted cricket betting platforms. With its carnival-like atmosphere, IPL captivates millions of viewers every year.
A significant reason behind IPL’s success is the vast financial investment involved. Players are auctioned for crores of rupees, and sponsors pay substantial amounts to be part of the league. This financial backing has helped IPL become one of the wealthiest sports leagues worldwide. Despite some controversies over the years, IPL has maintained its place as a top-tier sports event, constantly adapting to the times, innovating, and delivering top-notch entertainment for cricket enthusiasts.

IPL Format
The IPL is typically held between March and May each year, securing a dedicated slot in the ICC Future Tours Programme. Since its launch in 2008, the tournament format has undergone several changes, including franchise suspensions, rebranding, and drops. For IPL 2024, the league will continue with 10 teams, as has been the case in the previous two seasons.
Matches are scheduled in two slots—day games starting at 3:30 PM IST and night games at 7:30 PM IST. The league follows a round-robin and knockout format, with the 10 teams divided into two groups. Each team will play 14 matches, but unlike the earlier 8-team format, where every team played against each other twice, the current format has each team playing five opponents twice and the remaining four teams once. These fixtures are determined based on total IPL victories and final appearances.

IPL 2024 Schedule
The upcoming Indian General Elections, which will take place from April 19 to June 1, have delayed the full schedule release for IPL 2024. The schedule for the first 21 matches was released initially, with the remainder being published on March 26. The IPL 2024 final is scheduled to take place at Chennai’s Chepauk on May 26.
The season opener will feature Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on March 22 at 7:30 PM IST.
New Rules in IPL 2024
Most of the rules from IPL 2023 will carry over to this season. The ‘impact player’ rule remains, allowing one substitute per team, with restrictions on overseas players if the team has already fielded four. Teams can also continue to review wide and no-ball decisions.
However, a new addition for IPL 2024 is the allowance of two bouncers per over, compared to one in previous editions. For context, the ICC permits only one short-pitched ball in T20 Internationals, while two are allowed in Test and ODI formats. The “stop clock” rule, a recent addition to ICC playing conditions, will not be implemented in IPL 2024.
