Before the 2025-26 domestic season, all-rounder Vijay Shankar has joined Tripura, ending his long career with Tamil Nadu. The 34-year-old, who has played 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for India, will team up with former India batter Hanuma Vihari to strengthen Tripura across formats.
Shankar had been an important part of Tamil Nadu’s middle order for more than ten years. Since making his debut in the 2011-12 season, he played a key role in the team’s success, helping Tamil Nadu win two one-day titles in 2016-17 and a Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 title in 2021-22.
“I have got the NOC from Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, but I am still waiting for Tripura Cricket Association’s confirmation. I can officially announce my move once Tripura sends the approval letter,” Shankar told Cricbuzz.

Vijay Shankar’s move comes after Andhra’s Hanuma Vihari joined Tripura, likely to captain the team in all three formats. Together, they bring valuable experience and leadership to a Tripura side aiming for consistent performances in the elite domestic division.
Shankar has played 70 first-class matches, including appearances for India A, scoring 3,702 runs at an average of 45.14, with 11 centuries. As a medium-pace bowler, he has taken 43 wickets, proving his all-round capabilities. In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, he scored 476 runs at an average of 52.88, including two centuries.
After a strong 2014-15 season, Vijay Shankar played for India A and later for the national team. He was included in India’s 2019 World Cup squad and has been a prominent player in the IPL, representing Chennai Super Kings in 2025. The Tripura Cricket Association has officially confirmed his signing.
