Back when high scores were common in the Ranji Trophy, Maharashtra’s Bhausaheb Babasaheb Nimbalkar made history with his incredible batting.

In December 1948, playing against Kathiawar, Nimbalkar came to bat at 81/1 and stayed at the crease for three days. His effort took Maharashtra to a massive score of 826/4, with little resistance from the opposition.

On the third day during tea, Kathiawar’s players demanded that Maharashtra declare their innings; otherwise, they refused to continue. Maharashtra didn’t declare, and Kathiawar forfeited the match.

Nimbalkar remained unbeaten on 443 runs, just nine short of Donald Bradman’s record, hitting 49 fours and one six in his remarkable innings.

4. Prithvi Shaw (Mumbai) – 379 vs Assam | 2022-23

Prithvi Shaw from Mumbai is second on the list for the highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history.

Opening the batting, Shaw played an outstanding inning of 379 runs off 383 balls against Assam in a Group B match in Guwahati during the 2022-23 season.

His brilliant knock included 49 fours and four sixes. Along with captain Ajinkya Rahane’s 191, Shaw helped Mumbai reach 687/4d in their first innings.

In response, Assam was dismissed for 370 and 189 in their two innings, losing the match by an innings and 128 runs.

3. Sanjay Manjrekar (Bombay) – 377 vs Hyderabad | 1990-91

Batting first at the Wankhede Stadium, Bombay’s captain, Sanjay Manjrekar, took on Hyderabad from the start. He came in when the team was struggling at 5/1, then quickly dropped to 30/2.

Despite Hyderabad’s early success, Manjrekar and Dilip Vengsarkar dominated for the next two days. Manjrekar scored 377 runs off 473 balls, spending 666 minutes at the crease. His innings included 50 fours and five sixes.

With Manjrekar’s impressive batting, Dilip Vengsarkar (121) and Vinod Kambli (126) helped Bombay reach a total of 855/6 before declaring.

Hyderabad fought back strongly, and the match ended in a draw.

2. Tanmay Agarwal (Hyderabad) – 366 vs Arunachal | 2023-24

Tanmay Agarwal from Hyderabad achieved the joint fourth-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history. In a Plate Group match during the 2023-24 season, he scored 366 runs off just 181 balls against Arunachal Pradesh at the NexGen Cricket Ground in Hyderabad.

Before this, the explosive left-handed opener had set a record for the fastest triple century in first-class cricket, reaching 300 runs in only 147 balls. This broke the previous record held by Marco Marais of Border, who took 191 balls against Eastern Province in 2017.

Tanmay also became the first Indian cricketer to score over 300 runs in a single day’s play in first-class cricket.

His remarkable innings included 34 fours and 26 sixes, the most sixes ever hit by a batter in a first-class match.

1. MV Sridhar (Hyderabad) – 366 vs Andhra | 1993-941

Hyderabad was chasing Andhra’s low total of 263 in the first innings when MV Sridhar played a remarkable knock, scoring 366 runs from 523 balls.

At the time Sridhar came to bat, Hyderabad was at 30/1. By the time he was out, the score had risen to 880/5, with 850 runs being added during his time at the crease.

Hyderabad declared their innings at 944/6, leading by 681 runs. Vivek Jaisimha (211) and Noel David (207*) also scored centuries in the first innings.

Despite the huge total, the match ended in a draw.
